Breathing life back into my old Crackberry's
Was using my old Playbook to drive my video clock for years but the battery puffed up. Lets see if I can make it, or an old Z10 work without a battery.

Panasonic G Mechanism VCR were a real piece of Garbage
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.13 часов назад
This was the worst VCR design Panasonic made. It ended up on all their so called "High end" Abysmal Garbage SVHS machines. They were advertised as the indestructible aluminum die cast chassis. OK perhaps the chassis was OK, but all those plastic drive gears and grease that turned to glue was a recipe for disaster. This one turns off when stop or reverse search is selected.

You can put one of tha magnets to the screwdriver arm and leave it there = screwdriver is magnetic
That sure looks yummy.
Try to degauss the bits and then magnetize them again.
This one may be from the early 90s? 1991?
I liked the flash player they had lots of neat programs for it maybe if you got a older computer they might have still have a version of flash you can put on it I liked shockwave player to
Flash was disabled on all browsers several years ago. It was killed with a pushed update. It still works on the old phone because BlackBerry had ended updates of bb10 by this time. You would need an old computer that has not been online in years. Dame went for internet explorer. Its gone too.
Sony is dropping support on all optical media blue ray maybe DVD
It aint got no gas in it moment. Iykyk
Flooding the back of the battery with alcohol makes the adhesive give up and the battery comes out easy, its the same as laptops they wont startup without a battery
Try connecting the power directly to the battery terminal on the tablet
Not on these ones. Have a security chip on the battery.
Those last two caps, being next to the switch mode heat sink, wouldn't it have been better to leave the legs long on them so can sit a little proud and away from the heat sink, into the top of the shell.
No room, plus it lasted 20 years so it will be fine.

I thought you had a blackberry phone powering the clock channel
Hi Dave can you tell me where did you buy that ESR Capaitor meter I assume it was a kit you builded. DO KNOW WHO STILL SELL THEM. Where could I aquire one of these uints. Thanks!
I bought the kit probably 30 years ago. The shop died. The owner that is and his son closed the shop years ago.
Also i have let the gas out of a blaoted battery before by putting a ring of superglue around before i poked the hole, farted the gas out and immediately sealed it with scotch tape. Worked flawlessly.
I think a voltage divider from the 5V source with an additional diode could help make the device think there's a good battery with 4.2V connected that just doesn't pull any current cause it is "full". That could maybe work. Edit: Ahh nice approach!
I'm wondering what electricity bill you have with tons of stuff plugged in 24/7 ?
I had a BlackBerry years ago. I loved it alot. Loved the keyboard and it allways just worked. Kinda sucked for RUclips but it always did the job. At the end of its life i used to have to periodically jumpstart the battery with a 9 volt to get it to charge.
I didn't know flash was dead. I saved swf files on my computer for games and stuff. I haven't tried opening a swf for years. I wonder why they removed flash? I need to look that up. Edit: I read it ended in 2020 for security reasons. But an article indicated a person can still play them after downloading a third party app.
Looks like they kicked it a few times I hate UPS and FedEx I swear they purposely try to break everything.
So long story short some bonehead repaired the machine wrong the machine can play its own recordings in colour because it recorded on the tape wrong. Other tapes don’t match so it shows no colour. Got it.
When you ASSUME. Great repair and video!
Do the same to the playbook as you did with the phone with the power hack should work the same :)
I think I had that VCR back in the day. The power supply was weak, so it took 20 minutes of it cycling the power before it became stable. Seems like Panasonic has a lot of weak power supplies for a while. I didn’t know Panasonic made it for RCA, but that explains a lot.
Did you own a BlackBerry smartphone before? And what other phones did you have?
Yes I used that z10 for years. Also have a z30 and the android priv at work I had a curve, world edition, bold, q10 and q5 before we switched to Android. I wish blackberry was still around. They had the best phone for business.
The Bold you had was the 9930, since you're in Canada, and was your Curve unit the 8530, 9330, or 9220?
@@12voltvids, you also did own a Nokia phone before. Am I right? 😂
No never owned a Nokia. Was given an old one but my phones over the years Mitsubidhi Motorola, Sony ericcson, blackberry and Samsung in that order.
@12voltvids OK. And was the Curve you owned the 9220, 9330, or 8530?
When you get the clock working again I'd love to see a how-to on it
Stay tuned it's next up.
If the video heads were installed backwards, such that the A head was reading the B head's tracks and vice versa, would the different azimuth of the tracks cause an issue? Each head would be trying to read a video track recorded with the azimuth 12° off.
It reads. Levels are lower but it reads. FM remember
Dave can you adjust manualy your recording level on camera?
Yes it has full manual control but I leave it on auto because I can't be bothered.
👌👌👍👍😉😉😊😊🌹🌹
Timing is everything.
did Sony make blue gear on purpose brockable?
Now if yhat isn't a stupid question I don't know what is. The gear broke 9 times out of 10 when the machines were young because so many people believed video magazine advertising for allsop wet cleaner tapes. It was an expensive lesson. Now the fail just due to fatigue from the constant tension of the spring.
Maybe I’m missing it- but I’ve been trying to find your contact information… I have a Sony cd/fm/cassette player that has sentimental value to me that needs repair. (Someone forced the cr door open and now nothing will play). I’m not even sure you are receptive to work orders from your videos but I was hoping.
Maybe the reason that the service department closed was because of too many stupid mistakes like this and of course, that means annoyed customers that have to come back.
The reason the service department closed is nobody would work for the tyrant that owned the store. I put up with his shit for 19 years. Should have quit after the first month. The guy was a miserable prick, horrible person to work for. I only stayed because he paid me considerably more than other shops offered. Believe me I was looking around but taking a 7.00 to 9.00 cut in pay and having to drive to another area which meant fighting rush hour traffic for a tunnel or bridge for less pay meant I bit my tongue and put up with the shit, till one day I was few up with him. He tried to hire several guys and none would work for him. Hell when I was there there was a revolving door with techs being hired and the quitting within a month because of how he treated them. The year following my departure he had no fewer than 5 techs in there that quit. He had to do the work himself and not only was he badly out of practice he hated doing it. He ended up just closing the service dept and making the space a sales showroom for home theater. I have never said anything really negative about the place only that he was a very difficult man to work for but he paid me well and that js why I stuck with the place all those years. He had s stroke early in 2003 and when he came back he was 100 times worse than before and that was the straw that broke the camels back. I left right in the middle of construction of my house. I was half way complete with a 5vyear old and 3 year old and owing about 200,000 on construction of my house. I was the sole earner so you can imagine what I was going through. I went to work as a contract satellite dish installer and that js where I started to really make good money. Working 7 days a week but the cash was fantastic for a year. Then the NHL went on strike and nobody was putting up dishes. I heard the phone company was gearing up to begin the biggest hiring blitz since when I was in high school. That was my dream job. I wanted to work for the phone company when I was in high school but the quota was filled before I graduated. 25 years later I got my shot.
Can I ask you for something *if it's possible?* maybe you try a background noise suppressor before publishing videos? I have to use earphones and the noise is really annoying. Thank you
I recently found out the reason these 711B machines load and unload so slowly is because the sun and planetary gears tend to seize up. Another contributing factor is the tension of the belt for the cassette carriage. I just replaced these gears on an SL-T30ME I got recently and now it loads and unloads like a new machine. By the way the SL-2710 service manual is dated August 1983 so that gives you an idea of the age...
I agree it is overly complex, but to me it is a mechanical marvel; watching it moving is mesmerizing. I had to fix a TOTL Panasonic with the KII mechanism (I remember it had an extra toothed belt to speed up operations or to allow jog shuttle operations) with two broken gears (teeth snapped off). Once lubed and re-timed the tape transport was working perfectly. I honestly hated a lot more the membrane keyboard which was causing false contacts and locking the machine up (remote included).
Membrane keys blow, and by that I mean they suck.
🎉
Betamax what a dream
No one know VCR would still be in service
Vcrs are still in use for archiving old recordings. There are people that seek out old releases that never made it to dvd or streaming. Tons of content, mostly low budget that was cheap to produce and distribute on tape that never was released and for those film and vintage TV buffs that is who is using vcrs. The fella that owns this sent me 5 this time. All now running again. He said he has about 3000 tapes that he is now digitizing to hard drives never to be seen again. I stopped recording on tape about 24 years ago when dvd recording became available and moved to HD as soon as I could. For me tape archiving is a business so I keep my machines running for the soke purpose of getting home videos off tape to s more permamant solution. I do collect old vcrs just like I collect old tube radios but not to use, bit more to preserve a few. Future generations will have no idea what this was. Myaelf I am old school. I like physical media. I don't stream on my phone, for that matter I don't even have a data plan on my phone. I don't subscribe to any. I have my tunes on memory sticks.
Please, no hand. I want to record this 😂
VCR When it was in service, was there gear issues? Regularly maintenance
Yes lots. Used to order about 20 a month. Most broke when wet type cleaning tapes were loaded.
My other reolink cameras have the ability to manually turn on the spot light
02:02 - I keep seeing temperatures in the greater Vancouver area that I could barely call anything comfortably warm, in Windy. What gives?
I had a fair amount of capstan motor problems on these decks over the years. The capstan motors had to work pretty hard handling the rewind and fast forward of the tapes. Usually the tell-tale sign was the motor screeching during FF and REW.
They were garbage.
I’m surprised you didn’t check the caps in the power supply. Those caps were likely cooking for decades as the unit sat there plugged into AC and the clock and standby circuits were essentially on.
These ones don't have a capacitor issue and I doubt it's been plugged in for decades. It's owned by a guy that has dozens of machines he is using for archiving. It might see power once every few months if that.
No one knew one would be restoring VCR Machine
Dave, I have a few of these, all working fantastic thanks to your videos. But on one, the front bulb for the display backlight is slow to light up when first powered up. Any suggestions how I can fix that?
I believe its a florescent tube that lights it.
There were several variants of the G mech over the years. Most of them use an orange-colored toothed belt as apposed to the rubber belt this one has, as well as an exta half-load arm that brings the tape over the A/C head for counter readout during FF/REW. AG-1970 uses the GII mech, AG-1980 uses the K mech.
This unit has Faroudja video processing circuitry (mentioned on the back of the unit). I was curious what your thoughts are on this, was this on other decks back in the day?
I’m betting it is a TBC type feature. These units have great picture quality.
The Faroudja label is also on most of the Sony Video8 and HI8 HandyCams as well. And I know they have TBCs. So it could be a TBC and/or Digital Noise Reduction feature that Sony licensed? Is this the only Sony _VHS_ type machine with the Faroudja label? I haven’t seen others with it.
Faroudja designed video and timing circuitry that set the standard for video quality. Depending on the design they use both analog and digital circuits. Its not a tbc in the traditional aspect but it delivers tbc quality video. As far as I remember it compares the video over 3 lines just like a tbc but does ir internal. Tbc is normally an additional circuit that corrects the timing after the signal has been processed. This does the equivalent as the chroma and video signals are being processed. At least that is what I remember from a hi8 course I took on hi8 cameras that used it. It was reserved for the high end models.
My grandpa built the Titanic, that's why it sank.... Not bad... I gave this vid a like because it's educational. I still repair a lot of things 12voltvids fix, and I learn everything one needs to know from ur vids. Thanks 12voltvids.. RE
I am fascinated by garbage, all that clockwork to make use of 1 motor and 1 motor only.
Thanks for nothing
